New Year’s Resolutions for the Restless Hearts

Happy New Year, everyone!

It’s been a while since we’ve posted anything, and for that I’d like to apologize.  It’s been a rough few months as we’ve approached the end of the year, but our family is finding a new balance and have committed to reintegrating The Restless Hearts back into the daily flow.  So expect more from us from here on out!

In celebration of the bright beginning of 2018, the following is a list of New Year’s resolutions that may appeal to all the adventure seekers and wandering hearts out there.

1. New Faces, New Places

This one’s a given, but so necessary!  Every adventurer should have an idea of their travel goals for the upcoming year, at the very least to give themselves something to work towards.  Knowing ahead of time the nature of your travels will allow you to plan accordingly in terms of time off work, finances, on-the-road accommodations, etc.

Fabian and I are currently planning our biggest road trip yet, and we intend to take it this year!  We’ll be driving from North Dakota to Arizona over the summer, making plenty of stops along the way, hopefully crossing some items off of our bucket list in the process.

2. Healthy Living

I know, this is the cliche resolution that no one lives up to.  But a healthy traveler is a happy traveler!  Besides that, a strong and heathy body significantly expands the realm of possibilities when it comes to adventure options.  If your body can withstand greater physical ordeals, you’ll be rewarded with greater thrills, views, and overall conquests.

For those reasons, I’ve resolved to establish healthier eating habits this year, along with drinking more water, and maintaining my workout schedule.  When you work as much as I do, it’s so easy to fall off the wagon with any/all of these goals for the sake of convenience (i.e. it’s easier to sleep in than to get up and work out, to grab a quick bite than to prepare a proper meal, etc.).  But ultimately, these small changes in the present will accumulate into much bigger conveniences in the future when my body is better prepared to perform as needed.

Everyone is different, so my resolutions for a healthier lifestyle may not be the same as yours.  Some other areas of improvement could be starting a workout routine, reconnecting with friends, meditating, saying “no” when need be, etc.  Tailor your goals to meet your individual needs and work towards a better you!

3. Expand Your Horizons

Nearly everyone has a resolution of this variety when the New Year rolls in.  It looks different for everyone, but it all comes down to making room for possibilities where there previously were none.  For some, this may mean strengthening their bodies as described above, in order to tackle certain physical ventures.  But there are many other ways to expand your horizons as well.

For me, I hope to create new possibilities this year by going back to school (again, hah!), getting professional research experience, and making progress with language learning.  All three of these things will, in the long run, allow me new opportunities in the workplace and my travels.  I look forward to seeing where my ventures take me!

In closing, 2017 has been one of the best and worst years I’ve had yet.  I’ve accomplished a lot, and lost just as much.  I’m not sad to see it come to an end, if I’m honest!  I know the upcoming year will see just as many positive moments (hopefully without all the heartache), as Fabian and I have established our goals and have a strong vision for the many travels and risks we’d like to take this year.  Goodbye, 2017!
